Chapter Nineteen
There was an intruder in his apartment. Luke could hear him breathing, and then he felt him prod him in the leg, and he kicked out as hard as he could, his foot making contact. The unknown assailant fell and made a groaning noise, and Luke opened his eyes. The light was bright, and with a sickening feeling he remembered where he was. And if he was right, then he’d just kicked his new cellmate.
“Oh, fuck!” he cried, and looked over his bunk. He grimaced at the sight of Adam on the floor, clutching his head and rolling around. Luke leapt off the bed onto the floor, beside Adam. “I’m so fucking sorry! I thought I was at home, and you were…”
He was silent, and he waited with bated breath for Adam to punch him. He was sure the big guy could flatten him with one swipe of his hand, but instead Adam got to his knees, still clutching his head. Thankfully, there was no blood, but Adam blinked a few times, and Luke was sure he was seeing stars, or maybe even little birds flying around his head.
“That’s one hell of a kick you’ve got on you there,” said Adam, and Luke could tell he was in great pain, but the punch he was expecting in return never came. Adam was some kind of strange, gentle giant.
“I’m really sorry,” Luke said again, and he stopped himself from reaching out a hand to check the injury to Adam’s head. “It’s all new to me, and I felt you touch my leg, and I had this crazy feeling that there were people in my house, and I was under attack.”
Adam managed a weak smile, and when he moved his hand away from his head Luke was horrified to see a large red lump just above his right eye. He got to his feet immediately and took some of the toilet paper off the roll, then soaked it in some cold water from the washbasin. He returned and held it to Adam’s forehead.
“It’s not much,” he said, “but it might keep the swelling down by ten percent, maybe.”
“I was trying to wake you up,” Adam said, taking the damp paper and holding it to his head, wincing as he did so. “It’s six-thirty. We eat at seven-thirty, and I have to leave now, because I work in the kitchen. I just wanted to make sure you were up by the time the guards come, because they can get pretty nasty if people are in bed when it’s breakfast time.”
This made Luke feel even more guilty. Adam had only been trying to wake him so he didn’t get into trouble. The two men sat on the floor of the cell, and all around them, they could hear the noises of people waking up, starting a new day in prison. There came the loud noise of peeing from either wall, and even the odd, nonchalant fart. To Luke, it sounded a lot like camp, only more dangerous.
